InfiniBand has increased its lead as the top interconnect of choice on the November 2012 TOP500 with 224 clusters. From June 2012 to November 2012, the number of Mellanox FDR 56Gb/s InfiniBand systems increased by nearly 2.3X, including the top two ranked InfiniBand systems on the list, showing the increasing demand for higher performance, scalability and efficiency. This is really encouraging news for us. Mellanox’s InfiniBand adapters and switch systems optimise server and storage performance and provide the scalable, low-latency, and power-efficient interconnect for the world’s fastest supercomputers.
The new list also showcased the expansion of InfiniBand connecting cloud infrastructures. Most impressive is the fact that InfiniBand enables the most efficient cloud infrastructure on the list. This is more than 30 per cent higher efficiency than other 10 Gigabit Ethernet-based cloud solutions listed.
We’ve witnessed InfiniBand’s growth in the HPC over the last decade due to its ability to deliver application performance and data centre efficiencies, and we anticipate InfiniBand to become increasingly relevant in the enterprise data centre for the same reasons. The explosion of data volumes is significantly increasing the demand for network throughput. Web 2.0, cloud computing, Big Data analysis, virtualised data centers, and databases are only a few of the markets and applications that have seen significant performance improvement when run over InfiniBand.
InfiniBand is well suited to tackle the growing performance demands in these markets and applications – all areas the HPC community has pioneered for years. We expect InfiniBand adoption to continue at a high rate in HPC but are very excited to see it accelerate its march on the data centre core.
